about the san francisco bay area ...

the "bay area" is home to six million people. to the north is napa valley, famous for its wineries, natural hotsprings, "old faithful" geyser, and the petrified forest. the northern cornerstone of the area is the city of san francisco; a million-people melting pot of cultures and microclimates of its own, tourists bring in $2 billion annually to visit famous pier 39, the majestic golden gate bridge, or one of the city's many, distinct districts. the largest recent addition to the city is sony's new metreon shopping center, a 350,000 square foot complex at yerba buena center.

the peninsula of the bay area is lined with the "highest of tech" companies: hewlett packard, sun microsystems, apple computer, yahoo!, and many others. non- high tech sights along the peninsula include half moon bay, big basin redwoods state park, palo alto baylands preserve, chabot observatory, etc. each city on the peninsula offers its own view, culture, and sights.

the southern cornerstone of the bay area is the city of san jose, the largest city in northern california. dubbed the "capital of silicon valley," san jose was also california's first civil settlement, founded in 1777. it is home to an national hockey league team, the famous winchester mystery house (a 160 room victorian mansion), and more than 50 wineries. its residents speak more then 46 different languages, a further measure of the diversity of the entire area.
